Fujitsu UK: Touch Screen EPOS Replacement: Interaction Designer / Usability Consultant
• Fujitsu was selected by the Post Office to replace their point of sale user interface across 64,000 staff and 14,000 branches. This was one of the largest retail projects in Europe affecting 27billion transactions per year across 172 services and product groups.
• Engaged in a key role by Fujitsu, in conjunction with a graphic designer and retail expert, to design the new system using ‘use case realisation’ to determine interface elements and interactions. User tested the design with a high-fidelity prototype and prepared a 25 page assurance document for senior management.
• Personally delivered interface design, interaction design, usability inspections and user testing / prototyping elements of the project including: annotated wireframes; a scaleable navigation system; sequential aids; pluralistic walkthroughs; basic ergonomic predictions based on the users physical environment; high & low fidelity prototyping; and participant packs.
Post Office Ltd: Touch Screen EPOS Replacement: Usability Consultant
• Subsequent to fulfilling contractual obligations with Fujitsu, engaged directly by Post Office Ltd to ensure that Fujitsu delivered / implemented the usability elements of the new system.
• Acted as the interface between the Post Office, Fujitsu and the user community, leveraging usability testing results, published academic studies, reference material, business requirements and BSI / ISO standards to ensure Fujitsu delivered to agreed specifications.
• Additionally provided hands on expertise to interface design using Visio to develop solutions.
• Succeeded in delivering a system which: scored 8.5/10 in an ‘ease of use’ survey; allowed users to perform 7 critical tasks within 15 minutes; and will have a significant impact on the Post Office’s ability to improve customer service with increased clerk productivity and cost reductions.
Euroclear Bank: CRESTco Replacement: Usability Consultant
• Euroclear and CRESTco merged to create Europe’s largest settlement organisation leading to a £multi-million project to develop a single, consolidated custody platform across Europe.
• Engaged within a team of Usability Consultants to design a mouse-driven desktop application running on Java Swing and Windows XP platform which satisfied both business requirements and FSA and ISO regulations.
• Personally designed the interface for the French clearing system (BRN) which is being piloted Dec 07 and rolled out 2nd Qtr 08”. Additionally re-developed the systems ‘Help’ function which was over technical and non user friendly. Tailored documentation to accommodate users with English as a second language throughout Europe.
• Personally delivered interaction design, inspection, user testing / prototyping and business process re-engineering including: annotated wireframes; task analysis and task flow modelling; heuristic evaluation of existing securities trading systems; the creation of testing protocols; the development of a bespoke toolkit for rapid development of low and high fidelity prototypes; system design; and formal / functional specification development.
AKQA / ITV Television: Extranet Replacement: Usability Consultant
• AKQA were engaged by Independent Television (ITV) to redevelop their extranet used as an online resource for UK Journalists. Subsequently engaged by AKQA to provide Usability expertise to the project.
• Performed extensive user profiling; performed heuristic evaluation of existing site www.itvpresscentre.com and various competitor sites; produced annotated wireframes; conducted task analysis and task flow modelling; developed user testing protocols; and conducted extensive user testing.
• Liaised with the development team and managed the relationship between AKQA and ITV, presenting recommendations and prototypes to the client. Succeeded in developing a solution which was visually engaging; aligned to user requirements; and allowed ITV stakeholders to add content and provide access historical data.
The Home Office: Government Intranet Redesign: Usability Consultant & Developer
• The Home Office assembled a project team to redesign their intranet and resurrect an important communication tool that had lost the interest of its employees.
• Engaged in this 2 year initiative to develop a more user centric intranet. This involved assessing user requirements; conducting continual, iterative and heuristic evaluations of the site; providing input into site content; redeveloping site structure and strategy; designing and developing task-based sub navigation labels and creating subdivided content for lengthy topics; creating wifreframes and low & high fidelity prototypes; and conducting lab based user testing using Tech Smith Morae.
• Additionally designed new accessible page template code using ASP, CSS, HTML etc and undertook code reviews to ensure consistent, accessible, DDA compliant page design.
• Won the runner-up award in the 2006 BT Government Computing Awards for Innovation. The site subsequently experienced a 4000% rise in unique visitors and an increase in page impressions from 5600 a year to over 10 million within the following 12 months.
