Employment History

(Feb 2008 & ongoing)

Associate Safety Consultant

Home Based

I provide a comprehensive and professional health and safety consultancy service to all sectors of industry and specialise in construction safety (CDM).

(2004 & ongoing)

Senior Health and Safety Adviser

In June 2004 I was successful in attaining, through application and interview, a senior health and safety adviser position within the Council. I currently manage three professionally qualified safety advisers and two clerical staff who work within a wide, diverse and multidiscipline environment.

In addition to managing I still advise on the more technical project issues such as large construction and civil engineering projects and Civil Contingencies issues.
I am currently working in partnership with a Principal Inspector from the HSE, Environment Agency and the legal teams relating to health and safety issues on a large landfill site and its remediation.

With a very busy work load I keep myself abreast of all current and future safety issues. Through my chartered membership of IOSH I attend information seminars such as the West & North Yorkshire Construction safety group meetings, relevant seminars, safety exhibitions and IOSH branch meetings etc.

(1989 to 2004)

Health and Safety Officer

Bradford Metropolitan District Council

This post required me to advise the Council Executive Management teams on current and forthcoming H&S legislation.
This included briefing sessions, liaising and working with Council elected members, senior management bodies, Legal services, local management and staff.
The tasks ranged from the provision of an advisory service to serving prohibition notices for serious breaches of health and safety. I was also engaged in monitoring contractor’s health and safety from a client’s perspective.

Being exposed to these different areas of work I attained a wider understanding of complicated business management issues which taught me how to cope and deal with difficult situations. I was also introduced to business impact assessments relating to financial implications attached to final decision making.

(1987 to 1989)

Asbestos Officer

Bradford Metropolitan District Council

My career progressed by gaining both practical and technical experiences in a specialist high risk field. I was engaged in the identification of suspect materials through surveying and the taking of bulk samples leading to analysis. I compiled condition reports and created specifications to engage specialist contractors for removal.
I liaised and negotiated with clients such as school governing bodies, University building management and private industry organisations.
I also managed independent analytical companies as part of the overall contract.
I was instrumental in the development and maintenance of the Council asbestos register.
This post required me to deal with various enforcing agencies.

(1986 to 1987)

Assistant Health and Safety Officer

Bradford Metropolitan District Council

This was my first full time post providing me with an extensive professional experience in dealing with all aspects of health and safety at a senior management level.
The position was initially involved with construction project management and the development of internal health and safety procedures and policies. I had direct involvement in devising safety systems that were used to assist in the delivery of large construction projects.
This post allowed me to further my management skills and helped me achieve my first professional qualification.

(1984 to 1986)

Joiner/Management Surveyor/Safety Management Officer

Hi-Line Home Construction

Shortly after joining this company I acquired additional duties and responsibilities which included professional surveys, compiling reports, supervising and managing staff, scheduling work programmes, meeting contract deadlines and ensuring strict health and safety measures were adhered to. I left this post due to the company moving abroad.

Additional Information

ICT and Training

I am a confident, experienced and accomplished trainer. I have delivered many training courses and can comfortably facilitate and adapt information to suit any audience.
I am also competent in ICT and have identified training needs leading to the creation, developing and delivery of bespoke PowerPoint courses on a number of general and specific health and safety subjects. These included:

• Specialist H&S training to both senior executive management and staff.
• Management and staff health and safety responsibilities.
• Asbestos awareness and control.
• General Construction safety.
• Civil Engineering and Highway maintenance.
• Catering and building cleaning.
• Remedial timber treatments and other deleterious materials.

This is only a sample and many more subject areas have been delivered.

General Skills

I have developed revised and implemented general and subject H&S policies and procedures on a broad level. This process enabled me to interact with Executive and Board members at a senior level.
Through this process I have had the responsibility of developing management’s awareness of significant health and safety issues within their individual departments and globally throughout the organisation.
This forward thinking and progressive approach leads to positive and confident attitudes which in turn results in successful risk control.

I work with external bodies such as the HSE, Fire and Rescue Service Police authority, Local Environmental Health, Environment Agency etc.
Through these contacts I have a sound understanding of the importance of maintaining good relations with all concerned and appreciate the benefits and reward that co-operation and good communication can achieve.

One of my specialist skills has been developed by being heavily involved in construction project health and safety management including the procurement of competent contractors i.e. CHAS (Contractor Health & Safety Scheme).
I have also acted and advised on the role of Planning Supervisor for large in-house construction contracts.
I am fully conversant with the revised CDM regulations and appreciate the complexity and implications for all the duty holders.

Although my specialist subject is construction safety issues I can adapt my working patterns to any safety related subject.
I am currently working with the council’s Environmental management advisory services (EMAS) where the aim is to set safety and environmental standards for all departments.

Health and safety legislation is continually changing and there is a hardening of attitudes towards prominent safety issues such as CDM, WAH and asbestos.
I feel that employers need to emphasise an increased pro-active approach to these and all safety issues through clear understanding of the subjects at hand.
Managing and incorporating safety is an integral part of any core business plan and when managed successfully should achieve successful business growth.
My approach to safety is understanding, open and sympathetic with a heightened awareness of the problems associated with business health and safety issues.
I also understand that communication plays a significant role in assuring that the safety message is herd and understood by all concerned.

I have accumulated a wide breadth of knowledge in the day to day management of professional staff and been successful in advising on high risk industries and specialist areas.
I have also been party to influencing a change in attitudes toward adopting successful safety management systems.

I think that it is vital for safety professionals to keep abreast of current and future health and safety issues. It is also a fact that the safety subject is more commonly being incorporated into general business management issues.
As part of the safety professionals remit he/she has to interact with all business management subject areas. Combining this knowledge assists in analysing current status and helps to predict future impact assessments.
I am sure, given all my experiences, that I could share my positive attitude with others and give out the message that change and improvements to safety can be achieved given an understanding and commitment.
