CV

Throughout my career I have been interested and focused upon the representation of complex information and ideas with clarity, simplicity and focus. My skills and experience cover many fields, which are also complementary. This enables me to see the wider picture as well as the minute detail.

My wide-ranging experience covers concept development, design and production, and also extends to visual audits, feasibility studies, proposition development, application development, website development, technology assessment, multi-channel publishing and workflow consultancy. Specifically,

I specialise particularily in servicing the needs of transport planners, urban designers, architects, masterplanners, town planners, et al, who need clear, simple and visually engaging communications for their audiences. More often than not, there is the need to communicate plans for the future, the intangible and the complex. This is where I can help.

You might need a transport network diagram, development brief, supporting planning statement, tender document, a masterplan graphic, newsletter, website, consultation material, infographic, location plan... in fact anything from spatial analysis graphics to fully published documents. Moreover, if you have requirements for wayfinding and signing, then I can help. I wouldl be happy to discuss your aspirations and how they might be achieved, whether they are large or small.

Employment History

(Apr 2003 to Aug 2007)

Principal Consultant, Visual Communications

London

Having originally been recruited in 1998 as a Senior Consultant, I re-joined Steer Davies Gleave (SDG) in 2003. My focus was on transport information systems, environmental graphics, mapping applications, consultation material and printed media. Whilst at SDG, I led the design and production of Transport for London’s (TfL) Consultation Toolkit, Battersea Power Station’s Transport Accessibility Application, East Dunbartonshire’s Public Transport Guide, network mapping and signing for a revitalised Metrolink in Manchester, a printed and online mapping for
SEA/Renue in south London and many other projects for private and public sector clients.

Core tasks included: managed visual communication projects, including research, ideas generation, art direction, scheduling and client liaison; business development, including
the submission of proposals and expressions of interest; commissioned and managed relationships with external agencies and sub-contractors in print, reprographics, sub-editing, etc; provided professional and management support to other members of the business unit as well as
other consultants within the company; acted as personal supervisor to the junior consultants; designed specialist graphic and cartographic products for internal and external clients; provided design direction to the Corporate Marketing Group; and ensured all Quality Management System (ISO:9001 2000) procedures are followed within the business unit.

(Mar 1997 to Nov 1998)

Graphic Designer

London

I spent two years at NLP, responsible for the graphic and cartographic outputs for corporate and external clients. This ranged from corporate brochures to exhibition panels and bespoke mapping. The clients included blue-chip companies such as Computer Associates, Glaxo Wellcome and Marks and Spencer—as well as for many public sector clients. I helped NLP build
the graphic design and specialist cartography as one of its core service offerings.

Core tasks included: design of specialist graphic and cartographic products for internal and
external clients; and design and maintenance of corporate marketing material.

(Jul 1989 to Mar 1997)

Senior Graphic Designer/Cartographer

Aylesbury Vale District Council, Aylesbury, Bucks

Whilst working as the Senior Graphic Designer in the Department of Planning, Architecture & Engineering, I was responsible for introducing the Authority’s first GIS. Of particular note was its use in the creation of the country’s first local plan derived from large-scale Ordnance Survey land-line data. The local plan was derived and originated in the GIS package, then imported and manipulated in a graphics package for litho printing using computer-to-plate technology.

Core tasks included: design and production of graphic and cartographic products for consultation
and guidance; management and development of the DTP and GIS facilities; and the training and supervision of the junior technician.

(Jul 1988 to Jul 1989)

Planning Technician

Luton Borough Council, Luton, Beds

Working within the Planning & Engineering Department, I supported the Forward Planning Team in the production of maps and graphics for public consultation exercises, local plans and design guides.

(Jul 1985 to Jul 1986)

Whilst studying for my BTEC HND, I spent a year working here on work experience. I was solely responsible for the design and production of charts, diagrams and maps for the Institute’s scientific research staff.
