I have a long-held fascination for the interactions and creativity of urban life. Wanting to understand and be part of the forces that shape this life is what drew me to urban design and town planning. To which contextual factors should a design respond and why? What is the best form and function for a design? Knowing how answer these questions in order to directly affect change and make a difference is what I can do. What makes a place special? What makes a community unique? The histories and traditions of different places and people need to be understood if a design is to be appropriate and accepted. Getting under the skin of a place helps refine a design. Meaningful engagement with the public can be a most rewarding experience and can add value to almost every project. This is why I know how to organise and run successful design workshops using a variety of techniques. I am aware of the current urban agenda based around the challenges of renewal and intensification and the move towards new patterns of low-carbon development. As a long-time cyclist, I can use my everyday experience of the bicycle to help change travel patterns for the benefit of a particular project or place.
