Personal Lived Experience.
I have personal experience of severe mental distress as a young person and of experiencing the hard side of mental health services (hospitalisation and large doses of anti-psychotic medication). I have experienced and learnt to self-manage: voice hearing, intrusive thoughts, brief psychotic episodes, and depression. I have also learnt to recover from and overcome a severe problem with self-injury and eating distress.
I also experience living with a form of high functioning autism (not Aspergers) – despite this I have developed good people & organizational skills and confidence as an experienced group facilitator and trainer. As a result of my experience of severe mental distress and autism, I have developed daily tools that enable me to experience inner resources and robust mental health. My experience of living on the autistic spectrum has enabled me to use my enhanced visual processing system to create vision and focus in the development and delivery of the programs and projects outlined above.
My empathy and understanding of horses has enabled me to not only overcome my difficulties, but thrive as a result of them. It is my aim in the future to develop an equine assisted self-management and social employment program for people with emotional difficulties or living on the autistic spectrum.
