Editor, November 2002 to December 2006
Features editor, September 1998 to November 2002
I am proud to have edited the weekly magazine for journalists that was acclaimed for its editorial content and design during one of the most turbulent periods in its lifetime,
I led the redesign of Press Gazette in 2004 in public consultation with its readers through my innovative ‘The Big Edit’ project. After the title was purchased in June 2005 by Matthew Freud and Piers Morgan, I carried Press Gazette into what is widely accepted as the strongest editorial period in its history.
During this year I also led the 40th anniversary celebrations which included the biggest – and most lucrative – issue the magazine has ever produced, featuring my interview with Rupert Murdoch. The anniversary heralded the inauguration of Press Gazette’s newspaper Hall of Fame, immortalising its members in a specially commissioned exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
As a key figure at the heart of the ever-controversial British Press Awards, I have needed the greatest diplomatic skills to keep the warring factions on track and in negotiations. When the company went into administration, I led a plan to create an industry consortium to buy the title. It was a real personal achievement to get major publishing groups to act together in this way.
As editor, I forged excellent relationships throughout the media, particularly in newspaper, broadcast and magazine journalism. I have regularly appeared as a media pundit on television, radio and in print and have spoken at many large conferences, events and corporate occasions. The role also required carrying out and commissioning research into journalism and its place in the modern world.
I learned an enormous amount about digital delivery platforms during my editorship and feel excited about pushing new developments, including particularly videocasting. My editorship included a massive redevelopment of Press Gazette’s web site which saw a growth in traffic of nearly 400 per cent.
As features editor, I took responsibility for the project to launch the Student Journalism Awards, which has since become an annual fixture in the calendar for academic institutions involved in the training of journalists.
