  Excellent
06 June 2007: Working from very loose descriptions of our needs, Martin worked with Tenison's engineering, finance and sales staff, as well as directly with our customers, to capture and refine detailed requirements and specs. His implementation to those specs has consistently been delivered to a high standard and on time, with thorough and clear documentation. Martin's flexible approach and excellent communication skills also make him easy to work with.

CV

My work is mainly to do with system software: system administration of Linux/Unix networks - from large company networks through to individual's sole computer - and writing software that works closely with the system. This being the real world I also administer networks with Windows computers of various flavours and much of the programming is in perl & PHP to drive web sites.

As well as programming and administration I have also done technical support for a network equipment supplier. Having to look after individuals' computers means that I have to be able to supply support for non-technical people.

I have extensive knowledge of firewalls & Internet security and I have attended formal courses on "ethical hacking"

As far as possible I work remotely on most jobs.

I have been working on computers for over 30+ years, Unix for almost 25 years and using the Internet for 20 years.

On-going administration of this small ISP's network. Almost all of this work is done remotely.

I am responsible for all of the core Internet functions - such as DNS, mail (SMTP, POP, IMAP) & web - which is done on Linux servers. I look after all aspects of their Linux computers.

They also have Windows computers which are mainly used as public web servers and the office's internal infra-structure. I help the on-site person who does most of the day to day management of these computers.

KnowWare, Bristol

I did the technical support for the Portmasters, and other equipment produced by Livingston, which was sold into most of the ISPs in the country.

This continued until Lucent (who had bought Livingston) killed off the product range. The portmasters are still going strong but they are such a solid product there is no need for any support.

(Jan 1986 to May 2003)

Director / Contractor

K-par, Bristol

I was one of the directors and founders of this company which produced software for storage devices such as Optical Disc jukeboxes. This software was written in C & C++. I wrote code for all parts of this system from device drivers to user interfaces, although my main work was user interfaces (using X Windows) . I also wrote the installation and upgrade software, mainly as bash shell scripts.

I was the System Administrator for the company's network of Solaris workstations with a few Windows computers.

In 1994 I left the company and set up Vine Software. From then until 2003 I continued to write code for them as a contractor. This was mainly the Command Line Interface code for the appliances they were working on. I also continued to remotely look after their network.

This arrangement was terminated when the company was taken over and the new owners did not want to use contractors.
